Ideas on Decorating a Child’s Room
Decorating a child’s room is very different than decorating an adult’s room. Childhood is the time of getting inspired, daydreaming, playing around, doing homework, creating artwork and many activities that are more fun. A child’s environment reflects their unique personality. It has an impact of how the children feel about themselves and imitates the world they want to live in.
Each child deserves a personal space, which stimulates their imagination and will provide wonderful memories for years to come! The personal space could be their nursery, bedroom, play area, bathroom, and recreational room. A child’s bedroom is a place where they spend most of their time therefore it should be spacious, functional, safe, durable, and most important of all, age specific.
While decorating your child’s room, their opinion should be of prime importance. However, you should not burden them too much by giving them many choices because that would only confuse them. Just assign them simple and small tasks of choices like choosing their favorite colour, which you could use for painting walls. You can also make them choose among a range of design themes for example space, jungles, sports, angels, artistic or cartoon characters, underwater world, angels etc. and by allowing them to make choices, you would also be boosting their self-esteem and helping them polishing their skill of decision making.
For assisting your child in choosing the themes, you could provide them ideas from their favorite books, magazines, comic books, gaming, or even get help from the internet. You can reinforce your themes by choosing color-coordinated fabrics, wallpapers, or accessories. By repeating a color, fabric, or print thrice in the room décor you could easily emphasise upon the theme. The focal point of the decoration doesn’t have to be the bed necessarily. You could divert the focus towards study table or play area.
You could also introduce your child to the idea of recycling while decorating their room. Tell them to bring their favorite artwork, and you can frame those to put up on to the walls, or compile all of the artwork and pictures, get them laminated and use them as table place mats. By using this strategy, you would not have to buy new items, but still can give your child a creative environment.
Not every family can afford a separate room for their children’s study or playing purposes. Therefore, storage area should be a priority while decorating the room. You should spare enough place to stock up your kid’s books, clothes, and toys. Make sure to have the computer table transformed according to the theme. You can get baskets or make plenty to shelves and racks to display your child’s projects, collections, prizes etc. In addition, while making room for storage, also arrange for the room to be multi-functional so that your child can study and play in their room with ease.
Choose curtains that are simple yet decorative. Avoid long curtains, shades or drapers. Short curtains are always better for a child’s bedroom. Arrange for proper lighting so they would not have problem while studying or doing other work. A night lamp is very important, as most kids are scared of the dark.
The bonus of working with your child is that you get to spend some quality time with them. You get to know your child deeply and make some long lasting memories.
