Intel’s Next-Generation Notebook Cpus, Announced At The Consumer Electronics Show In Las Vegas, Are So Powerful They Can Compress The Contents Of

The Samsung R466-DS09 laptop’s glossy material appears elegant. The frosted metallic surface texture and silver palmrest are very good, like piano paint materials. The whole laptop gives a delicate texture feeling, with Samsung’s LOGO in a decorative mirror, making the laptop even more genuinely dignified.

To see if the Core i7 family lives up to its billing, I gathered three new notebooks for a high-performance shootout: Fujitsu’s LifeBook E780, Hewlett-Packard(HP DV2000 Battery)’s EliteBook 8540w and Lenovo’s ThinkPad W510.

That may soon change. Intel’s next-generation notebook CPUs, announced at the consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, are so powerful they can compress the contents of a PC display on the fly and stream it wirelessly to a soon-to-be-introduced Netgear set-top box, the Push2TV (PVT 1000), that you’ll connect to your set via HDMI or component cables.

IBM and Lenovo, a Chinese-owned company that bought the brand in 2005, have at times been bold with the ThinkPad’s engineering. For instance, in 2008, Lenovo(ThinkPad X61 battery) launched a very thin but full-width line, the X300 series, which uses cutting-edge materials and goes to head-to-head with Apple’s ultrathin MacBook Air.

The bag makes no pretensions to being stylish. Mostly big: 13×19x14 inches (HWD) and 6.5 pounds. It’s a ballistic nylon brick on steroids. Square corners are the order of the day and the one color is, of course, black. Pull back the overhanging rain flap, unzip the top, then lift out the freestanding laptop sleeve that’s at the top of the bag. In the inside front half are three vertical dividers designed to hold virtually any lens up to a 300mm f/2.8 lens that’s about 10 inches long and 5 inches diameter, or a camera with most any lens smaller than that. In the back half are six divider pockets that can hold one big lens or flash per section, or with a horizontal divider in place, two medium lenses per divider. Because of its size, you don’t have to squeeze your gear into place.

Assuming Apple(Apple A1189 Battery) doesn’t immediately reduce the price of this puppy, I’ll go with the published prices. For a video product you need at least 32GB of memory. Since you can’t add 3G after purchase – and I expect most people will want that feature – that brings the initial price to $729. The folks I know that have tried it also say you absolutely want the keyboard for $69, the case for $39 so you don’t crack the screen, the dock for $29, and the camera adapter for an estimated $19. That gives you a total working budget of $885 for the device and all its accessories.

At first blush, the feature set is appealing. The system includes a Core i5 430M CPU with a base clock speed of 2.26GHz, plus 4GB of DDR3 memory. Housed in a sleek, relatively thin blue plastic chassis, the laptop comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, a built-in Webcam, and 802.11n wireless networking.

That makes the $349 Dell iM1012-687OBK the least expensive of the three versions of this system we’ve seen this year. At the same time, you can configure a similar system, with the same Intel Atom N450 CPU and 160GB hard drive, plus upgrade to 802.11n Wi-Fi, for $299 through Dell(Inspiron 6400 battery)’s online configurator. Though it’s hard to recommend paying more, retail laptops have the distinct advantage of instant gratification, and the $50 may be worth it if you need a system right away and can’t wait for one to ship (order that $299 configuration from Dell’s Web site today, and the estimated shipping date is 10 days from now).

In fact, aside from Asus and Apple(Apple A1175 Battery) who seem to be the closest to their claims (in my admittedly completely unscientific opinion), it seems just about everyone else is fudging the numbers to stand out in a competitive field.

The Archos 13 A13PS is based around the same 13.3-inch as its predecessor but it’s not clear at this stage whether it will come with the same 1280 x 800-pixel resolution or whether Archos will update it to a 16:9 aspect ratio panel with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. With a super-slim body, the 1,5kg chassis is the ideal size for life on the move.  What’s more, with a 10-cell battery you’ll find an eight hour 255-3S4400-F1P1 battery life easy to achieve.

The Zero Charger is in fact a USB charger, so it’s good for iPods and other devices, too. It should really come with every one of AT&T’s cellphones, but it appears that you’ll have to buy one (big surprise. Thanks AT&T). Given that anyone savvy enough to buy the Zero Charger is also likely to already unplug their chargers, it seems more like a rather pointless PR exercise.

Witness the Acer Aspire 5538G. On the surface, it is hardly noteworthy. 4 GB of RAM, 320-GB hard drive and a modest ATI Radeon HD 4330 graphics card, and powered by a 1.2-GHz Athlon X2 L310. The 15.6-inch LCD offers a minimum-standard 1366 x 768-pixel resolution with somewhat below-average brightness. It’s a touch above average weight (5.3 pounds) but below average in Aspire One battery run time (2 1/4 hours). Performance clocks in at the level of the cheapest Intel-based machines in this class, but within the realm of acceptability. If nothing else, having the discrete graphics card is a nice touch that at least makes gaming a possibility, albeit a bumpy one.
