How much commission for a sales rep?
I have a home accessories warehouse and would like to hire commission only sales reps to work B2B accounts in the area. What would be the going rate for commission and would they be considered contract workers on 1099’s?
Each industry has a range that is customary for commission percentage. Is there an industry organization in your area you could contact for advice?
It is typical that most salespeople are employees – w-2, not 1099. Insurance agents, investment reps, and real estate agents are sometimes exceptions. If a person works for more than one company, they may be considered self-employed, not w-2. Check with your state Labor and Industry or similar department to be sure. You may find yourself owing years of back FICA and other taxes like one of my past employers did.
