Fashion Accessories Design Jobs
Can I break into a career in the fashion industry if I have a graphic design degree w/ a minor in marketing?
I’m not sure what position I’d like, but somewhere along the lines of helping to sketch out the ideas for clothes/accessories and shopping for the best items for a company or store. Can anyone help me with this? I have several years of retail experience (food, clothing and drug stores) and have worked a few administrative assistant jobs in the past. Thanks for the advice!
Sure a degree in graphic design is a great start. The fashion industry is very tough to get into but it’s certainly not impossible. You might have to be prepared, though, to rough it out for a bit by being an assistant at a fashion house. Most of these corporate headquarters are located in New York. However, understand that these opportunities are in very high demand so you’ll have to try to network a lot and meet the right people. It might take a while.
The other part of what you’re talking about is the role of a buyer. Buyers decide what products a brand/store should carry for the coming season. They try to forecast sales and trends and make sure they make the best decision for the future of the line. That’s another path where you’ll have to start from the assistant level and almost act like an apprentice until you build a reputation and some experience.
