Battery post on a truck melted?

I got a 78 chevy scottsdale and I have been working on it for quite some time. Though, today, I decided I’d just throw a battery in it and run it temporarily without the charging system or any of the belt driven accessories running. Iv’e never had this problem, but this truck literally melted my negative battery post all the way down as far as it would go, then it looked like electricity was poping everywhere. This battery is only 2 years old, now its no good. I just replaced my battery cables on this truck about a year ago. What would of caused my battery post to melt like this?

was the terminal loose on the post? if it wasnt too loose you’ve got something shorting to ground somewhere. take a continuity tester and probe both terminals, make sure the doors are closed and everything is truned off, and do it with the battery removed, just put one probe on each terminal, and you should not hear the tester beep. if it does you’ll have to start unhooking cables until it stops. also visually inspet all the wiring on the truck, for a 78 that shouldnt be much wiring, you might see some burned up wires in other places, could help you find the short
