A standard role of thumb to follow is to size your mirror according to the size of your sink, choosing a slightly smaller mirror if you have a large sink, and a larger mirror if you have a small sink. The idea here is that you do not want to overstate either item, so you are in essence aiming for a delicate balance.
If you have a larger sink, a bathroom vanity that is smaller in size will allow you to add a few accessories that will bring out the trimming. For example, if you choose a wooden trimmed mirror, then small wooden potpourri holders will nicely bring the wood full circle while also adding a bit of a pleasant scent and taste to the room.
On the flip side, if you have a smaller sink, you do not want to leave the entire wall empty and blank. In fact, the same sized bathroom vanity will only make the room look emptier since it will draw attention to the open expanse. Therefore, you may find it appropriate to choose a mirror that is a few feet wider than the mirror.
Overall, once you get the sizing of your bathroom vanity correct, the only thing you have to consider is the trimming which is dependent on your theme. The mirror will demand attention on its own so long as it matches the overall theme of the bathroom, whether that is clean and sharp, or earthy and warm.
