Accessories Tent Trailer
is it possible to use my car electrical outlet to charge or use my tent trailer battery?
hi there, i just bougth a used Viking epic pop up tent trailer 2006. i got the brake controller and ligths installed in my truck to towed it.But the guy who installed it did not run a live wire for accessories or line to charge the tent trailer battery. Is it possible for me to use the electrical outlet of my truck and directly connected to the positive and negative terminal of the trailer battery to charge or used it. Anyone could give some ideas? thanks
If it’s the cigar lighter type DC outlet I recommend not doing that. They’re not designed with that much amperage in mind. Your best bet is to either connect jumper cables from your truck’s engine battery to your trailer battery and let it charge that way with the engine running. You can also go to an RV store and buy an A/B battery switch and wire that up to your truck’s charging system so after you start your engine you switch to the trailer battery and it’s all charged up by the time you get to your camping spot. Remember to switch back to your truck battery so that gets recharged for when you need to start your engine again.
You can also ask experienced RVers and RV supply people about other methods of charging your trailer battery like solar, wind, small generator, etc.
