The New Droid X?! anyone have it yet?

Ok, Today is my birthday and my phone upgrade is up so i decided im gonna go get a phone, and since the droid X is the newest on verizon i figure i would get it, but a few questions

You should be able to get it at the store for 199 (with a two year contract) or 149 online.

I use the Skype application and the bar-code reader. I also downloaded the who-wants-to-be-a-millionaire game. But be careful Skype. You will lose minutes. I called my mother-in-law in Japan for 18 minutes and it was counted as a call to Atlanta. So Skype is only free in off-peek hours (after 9PM and on the weekends).

I have my phone set to wireless network access, satellite location, email updates, and all the bells-and-whistles. I’ve been playing with it a lot. My battery goes into the red-zone after about four hours. My old cell phone would hold a charge for about one week. But with a cool new device, you’re always interested in actually using it. And I’ve gotten really good (within a few days) at surfing the web. All those multimedia features drain the battery. I like the voice recognition feature. I can simply ask it a question and get an answer. Also, the keyboard can be a pain. But if you just talk, it’s usually pretty accurate and it’s easy to edit a mistake.

Another cool feature is the camcorder. The video is horrible in dimly lit conditions, but very good in daylight. And it’s really easy to transfer to your computer. There’s an HDMI cord that allows you to hook up the droid to your TV and play video. That’s cool too. It’s almost like having a pocket DVD player.

The only game I like is called “paper toss,” where you try to throw a wrinkled up piece of paper into a a basket.

The most annoying feature is the screen lock and finger “swipe” requirement. When you’ve got the phone in your pocket and you get an incoming call, you have to play some fancy finger games to get it unlocked. It’s pretty much impossible when I’m driving or walking my German shepherd. I have to use both hands to get the phone unlocked and accept the incoming call. On my old flip phone, I simply opened the phone and the call was live. With the droid, I fill like I’m dealing with a mini-computer that someone decided to add a phone function too.

As for accessories, I got the case and the car mount. But it’s hard (slow) to pry the case off, so now I’m not really using the mount much. The HDMI cable is a must. You can forget the phone charging cradle. The only benefit to that is that it makes your droid look like an alarm clock. Otherwise, just go with the standard charging cable. Last, I think the cigarette lighter cable is a good idea, but you could save money by just buying a power converter at an auto parts store – or driving a newer car with the USB plug already there.

EDIT: I visited the Verizon store in Wenatchee and asked about the swipe requirement. There’s an app called auto answer that enables your phone to automatically answer in speak mode and do so only for numbers you have starred in the address book. So when I go for a walk with the dog, I set it to auto answer for for wife. And that solved the problem. (The problem was it’s hard to swipe with only one hand.)
