What is a good external mic for the Canon HV30?
I recently bought a Canon HV30. I love love love the video quality. I’m not so sure what to do with the sound.
The tape is really loud and you end up hearing it in all of my videos.
It has an advanced accessory shoe on it.
I just don’t know what external mic I should get to put on it. Where could I find a good one. Or could you even point me in the direction of a good one?

What is your budget?
We don’t know what your video capture environment is – but the FIRST thing I would STRONGLY recommend is that you start using the manual audio control the HV30 has. One of the reasons you can hear the tape mechanism is you are likely recording under VERY low audio conditions. When you do this, the camcorder’s built- in automatic mic gain circuit increases the mic “listening” for audio. The tape drive motor is nearly 2 inches away from the internal mics. It is a given the auto-mic gain will work and pick up that audio. When you use manual audio control, it bypasses the auto mic gain and the motor noise should be substantially reduced (maybe enough that you decide an external mic is not needed).
As for external mics, what is your budget? With a 1/8″ (3.5mm) stereo mic jack, you *could* limit yourself to consumer-grade mics like those from Audio Technica, NRG Research or even something a little better like a RODE video mic. Or you could opt for an Audio Technica AT-822 stereo condenser mic… or use an XLR adapter like those from juicedLink or BeachTek and get good pro-grade mics like the higher-end Audio Technica or Sennheiser mics…
